Al-Balad 90:1
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ1
I swear by this city, Makkah -
Laaa uqsimu bihaazal balad
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Al-Balad 90:2
وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ2
And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -
Wa anta hillum bihaazal balad
Al-Balad 90:3
وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ3
And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
Wa waalidinw wa maa walad
Al-Balad 90:4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ4
We have certainly created man into hardship.
Laqad khalaqnal insaana fee kabad
Al-Balad 90:5
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ5
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
Ayahsabu al-lai yaqdira 'alaihi ahad
Al-Balad 90:6
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا6
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalal lubadaa
Al-Balad 90:7
أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ7
Does he think that no one has seen him?
Ayahsabu al lam yarahooo ahad
Al-Balad 90:8
أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ8
Have We not made for him two eyes?
Alam naj'al lahoo 'aynayn
Al-Balad 90:9
وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ9
And a tongue and two lips?
Wa lisaananw wa shafatayn
Al-Balad 90:10
وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ10
And have shown him the two ways?
Wa hadaynaahun najdayn
Al-Balad 90:11
فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ11
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
Falaq tahamal-'aqabah
Al-Balad 90:12
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ12
And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
Wa maaa adraaka mal'aqabah
Al-Balad 90:13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ13
It is the freeing of a slave
Fakku raqabah
Al-Balad 90:14
أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ14
Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
Aw it'aamun fee yawmin zee masghabah
Al-Balad 90:15
يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ15
An orphan of near relationship
Yateeman zaa maqrabah
Al-Balad 90:16
أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ16
Or a needy person in misery
Aw miskeenan zaa matrabah
Al-Balad 90:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ17
And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Summa kaana minal lazeena aamanoo wa tawaasaw bissabri wa tawaasaw bilmarhamah
Al-Balad 90:18
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ18
Those are the companions of the right.
Ulaaa'ika As-haabul maimanah
Al-Balad 90:19
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ19
But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
Wallazeena kafaroo bi aayaatinaa hum as-haabul Mash'amah
Al-Balad 90:20
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ20
Over them will be fire closed in.
Alaihim naarum mu'sadah
